Write down the number 34 on a piece of paper and fold it so no one can see it. Give it to someone to hold. Ask that person to pick a number in the first row of the following table:

If they pick the number 3 for example, circle the 3 and cross out the numbers below, left and right of the three:

Tell them to add up the circled numbers then have them read the paper. It will always be equal to 34.
